Every person will have equal opportunity to achieve economic success, sustainability, and financial security. The NAACP Economic Department recognizes the importance of the economy and economic issues in advancing an equal opportunity society and aims to address the challenging economic realities facing our country including poverty, lack of jobs and disproportionate high unemployment, lack of affordable housing, foreclosures, etc. The NAACP Economic Department’s work enhances the capacity of African Americans and other underserved groups through financial economic education; individual and community asset building initiatives; diversity and inclusion in business hiring, career advancement and procurement; and monitoring financial banking practices.

CRIMINAL

JUSTICE

Protes_edited.jpg

Equitable dispensation of

justice for all

The NAACP advocates for smarter, results-based criminal justice policies to keep our communities safe, including treatment for addiction and mental health problems, judicial discretion in sentencing, and an end to racial disparities at all levels of the system. Disproportionate incarceration, racially motivated policing strategies, and racially biased, discriminatory, and mandatory minimum sentencing will end. Incarceration will be greatly reduced and communities will be safer.

The United States is home to the world’s largest prison population. As “tough on crime” laws have put an unprecedented number of non-violent offenders behind bars in recent years, our neighborhoods feel no more secure.

We pursue police accountability on their treatment of African American citizens, provide legal rights seminars for the formerly incarcerated, and creating a more diverse law enforcement project-training recruits to take law enforcement tests monitoring police body camera implication in law enforcement agencies.

Technology provides a unique opportunity for our people in the new tech economy.

Chair: Brooke Smith

Email: DigitalMedia@FarRockawayNAACP.org

In the midst of a pandemic, this year has cast a light on both the inequities and opportunities that technology presents. As New York continues to see tremendous growth in the tech sector, communities of color must approach the coming tech economy with both the skeptical awareness of the historical tendency of industries to abuse black people and the optimism of a unique opportunity to create more wealth within our community.

With a new administration here in NY that is much more tech-friendly than the previous, this committee has even more work to do to hold the growing tech sector accountable and ensure that communities of color take advantage of the incredible opportunities that tech can provide.

Environmental and climate justice is a civil rights issue. We all depend on the physical environment and its bounty.

Chair: Lynette Shelborne-Barfield

Email: Environment@FarRockawayNAACP.org

Toxic facilities, like coal-fired power plants and incinerators, emit mercury, arsenic, lead, and other contaminants into the water, food, and lungs of communities. Many of these same facilities also emit carbon dioxide and methane — the No. 1 and No. 2 drivers of climate change. But not all people are equally impacted. Race — even more than class — is the number one indicator for the placement of toxic facilities in this country hit by climate change.
